Cool Plants for Cold Climates
Cool Plants for Cold Climates: A Garden Designer’s Perspective
Cold climate gardening brings special challenges. Discover not only
exceptional species and cultivars – time tested in Alaska in a variety of
regions – but also how to evaluate other plants that you might consider, to
insure they are truly the best of the best. Each plant in this seminar has
been selected with an emphasis on its garden impact, outstanding beauty,
ease of culture, early season and fall value, winter display, attractiveness
to pollinators, and, of course, hardiness. From annuals and bulbs to
herbaceous perennials, grasses, trees, shrubs, and vines – each is put to
the test of exceptional foliage, interesting flowers or seedpods, colorful
bark or stems, architectural form, motion, fragrance, length of bloom,
vigor, and ease of maintenance.

Create a Haven for Birds, Bees and Other Pollinators
A thoughtfully designed, pesticide-free garden can become a wonderful haven for wildlife. Discover the many and often simple ways in which we can create a welcoming, safe, and healthy habitat for butterflies, bees, and
hummingbirds, including which hardy plants and colors are most attractive to each, the best way to provide water for them, and what they need for nesting and rearing their young. Whether your interests include food crops, native plants or ornamentals, or all of these, and regardless of how small or large your garden might be, this seminar will offer helpful information for your success in drawing a range of pollinators to your location.

and other plant attributes to create combinations that far exceed the beauty
of each individual plant. Taking the notion of combination planting to a
refreshing new level, this seminar uses examples of gardens to offer a
unique perspective on how to achieve results that set an exceptional mood
and ambiance. Learn techniques to design upbeat, dazzling, and exciting
combinations as well as those with a calm, more subtle, but still very
memorable presence.
