A hands-on workshop exploring the many shapes and forms of very short stories, from the one-thousand word flash fictions down thru the 300 word and smaller micro-stories, and all the way down to the popular ten-word stories featured in literary magazines and writing contests. The class with give students a working knowledge of the from and it's narrative strategies, including vignette, anecdote, fable, tale, prose poems, and testimonies, to name a few. Major narrative elements such as plot, rising action, character, and time will be examined withing the context and needs of these very short forms. Students will write practice stories in many of the forms, learning to compress and tighten prose to meet rigorous minimal word requirements of this popular contemporary form.
