Introduction to QGIS (Quantum GIS)

This workshop will serve as an introduction to GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and the tools in QGIS (Quantum GIS).  Concepts covered in class include geographic datums, projections, coordinate systems, base maps, attribute tables, point, line, and polygon shapefiles.  We will practice several editing tools for shapefiles, including selection, clipping, zooming to extent, layer modification, reshaping, creating segments, taking measurements, adjusting nodes, and map creation. A highly detailed polygon shape file of Alaska will be provided, as well as sample line surveys and behavior point data from actual killer whale surveys.

NOTE:   Participants can use personal laptop or campus lab units. If using personal PC laptop, participants should download in advance the free program: http://www.qgis.org/en/site/forusers/download.html
