Portrait Painting

Through the use of a model, this 8-hour workshop will break portrait painting down into a series of manageable steps. On day one, we will begin with a limited palette, focusing on composition, drawing, temperature, value and the importance of distinguishing the light mass from the shadow mass. On day two, we will introduce more colors to the palette, building onto the foundation that we created on the previous day. With a more complex color palette and a strong foundation, we will focus on capturing the subtlety of the color and values perceived in the model before us. All levels welcome. Students provide supplies.

Supply list: Bring whatever colors you have. Please be sure to have the minimum: three chromatic primaries and white. Also: refined linseed oil or walnut oil; small bottle of gamsol; two jars with lids; assortment of brushes (any and all); cotton rag; palette (not a watercolor palette, please); easel if you have one; pre-gessoed canvas.
